Luxury interior design tips – 4 key points in London’s style history

London’s rich history offers a wonderfully eclectic mix of properties which can offer a lot of period charm, but it can be hard to work out what features to keep, add or lose when planning to renovate or modernise.

Part of the full home interior design journey that we find incredibly rewarding is the process of interpreting a brief and developing a design that connects the lifestyle of our clients with their space. The past can create inspiration for your interiors, yet the careful layering of textures and finishes with curated accents can provide a truly individual look within an interior design scheme.

London’s most iconic interior design styles

Here are some iconic design styles that have influenced London’s modern interior design throughout the ages to help you get to know your property and turn your architectural features into a showstopping interior design scheme!

  • Mock Tudor – lavish gothic interiors influenced by the European Renaissance period
  • Georgian – exquisitely balanced proportions, harmonious symmetry and classical detailing
  • Art Deco – rich colours, bold geometry and exuberant shapes encapsulate the roaring twenties
  • The Swinging 60s – from retro-modern to space-age designs – all distinctly groovy

1. Modern Tudor interior design

The Tudor period (C’1485 – 1603) marked an age of prosperity, investment from expanding trade, and the gift of land to royal favourites, welcoming them to design and build lavish stately homes. The style of interior décor was epitomised by extravagant wooden four-poster beds, rich velvet fabrics and dark oak panelling. When looking to recreate this look and with dominant and magnificent features such as these, it is important to keep the design schemes modest.

By layering elements such as ambient and warm lighting with ornate accents or unique pieces of artwork you can bring a scheme together without overpowering the space. Neutral drapery or upholstery can also work together to provide a peaceful space to relax whilst providing an uplifting contrast to darker features. Whether applied to a residential interior scheme, luxe hotel suite or a bespoke piece of furniture, personal design details provide a connection between person, function and aesthetic.

2. Mock Georgian house design

The Georgian (C’1714 – 1830) interior design style, renowned for its timeless elegance and graceful grandeur, focuses on creating harmony and balance within a space. This era spans more than a century and takes various influences from Palladian to Neo-Classicism. Georgian architecture is typified by high ceilings, panelled walls and ornate fireplaces with delicate furnishings and uncluttered décor. The colour palette started with bolder, baroque-inspired hues such as sage green and burgundy; but as the century progressed, the palette became lighter to showcase more neutral blues, greens, soft greys, dusky pinks and flat whites. This perfectly marries the interiors of handsome beauty, modern-day luxury and contemporary styling.

A carefully considered Georgian inspired interior design scheme is balanced – the furniture, fabrics and colour palette all work in harmony with the architectural backdrop within a home. The tiniest of details provide an opportunity to inject colour, texture or character to create an opulent interior – from restoring dramatic coffered wall panels to adorning the walls with elegant gilded light fixtures. By infusing a space with a delicate balance of classic and contemporary styles, we can breathe new life into a space and create a legacy built to last.

3. Art Deco interior schemes

Art Deco (C’1905 – 1930) interior design instantly evokes opulence; elegant, glamorous and sleek, this style was popularised as the epitome of chic in the 1920s. The movement was a revolutionary shift away from the austere Victorian era and has remained as current throughout the years as it was at its inception. The bold and sweeping statements of geometry, symmetry and metallics bring visions of the legendary fictional character Jay Gatsby.

Natural and geometric interior schemes feature heavily throughout this period, providing the perfect backdrop for bold and sumptuous pops of colour. Creating contrasting textural layers helps to bring a design scheme together while adding warmth, depth and character to any room. On-trend materials and accessories can be combined to create a real impact and a truly individual look. By placing small elements such as vintage Art Deco glassware can make side tables look gorgeous or can add interest to dinnerware by layering a variety of colours.

4. The Swingin’ 60s meets Retro Chic style interior

The Mid-Century Modern era transformed London from a bleak city recovering from the troubles of the Second World War into a capital of freedom, hope and promise. 1960s style at a glance is playful, optimistic and timelessly contemporary which is encapsulated in the music, fashion and interiors of the time. The décor of the 60s is instantly recognisable due to its bold colours and patterns, whilst furniture design included ergonomic curves creating space-age inspired statement pieces.

Incorporating the best of this era, while still maintaining a contemporary feel is the key for the modern home. Create textures with stand-out retro finishes such as Pop Art wallpapers, retro record players or Shag Rugs to turn an elegant space into a showstopper! Or create a daring style statement with bold contrasting colours for a luxury interior scheme that exudes fun, energy and joy reminiscent of the rock and roll revolution.
