A contemporary bathroom that exudes understated luxury

“We wanted to create a stylish yet personal design with the luxury feel and features of a chic hotel bathroom but in the comfort of the client’s own home.”

Being well-travelled and with an international style, our client’s brief for the design of the master bathroom was to create a modern, industrial style look with beautiful natural stone and a sense of luxury.

The design was organic, starting with the bath, which was placed by the window to take advantage of the beautiful view. We then ‘stole’ space from the hallway to fit a steam/sauna shower, with a generator housed inside the stud walls, leaving the main wall opposite the bathroom’s entrance for a showcase double vanity.

The contemporary bathroom vanity creates a central focus

We wanted to create a spectacular focal point with the vanity area that really defined the room’s overall design essence. The design started with strong lines, seen in the chunky horizontal vanity top, offset by strong vertical grey limestone storage niches on either side. To balance this, the support bars of the mirror curve gently back towards the wall with further curves provided by the oval surface-mounted bowls. The effect is quietly dramatic. The vanity cupboard doors have a textured surface by Xylocleaf that mimics metal mesh when close up.

Mixing luxury materials adds warmth and character

The stripy stone is Honed Ocean Black Travertine, used for its warmth, character and beautifully consistent veining, without being overbearing. Despite its strength in pattern, it is understated and timeless. We then chose Urban Grey Antiqued Limestone to provide a solid contrast to the movement of the Travertine. The metals bring the industrial twist specified in our client’s brief, without being too cold. Mixing metals such as the vintage brass taps, bronze metal mirror, radiator and door frames provides a more authentic feel.

A key aspect of the design was the consideration of the metal finishes within the bathroom. To successfully implement the sophisticated industrial look, the metals needed to be different yet complement one another to allow for a timeless feel. A careful mix of antiqued and vintage brass as well as dark bronze was specified and where the exact finish could not be achieved in the piece, such as the towel rail, it was made bespoke to achieve the desired specification.

This bathroom design exudes elegance and refined luxury

The result is a design where the materials, textures and finishes combine in such a way that the overall look and feel exudes a sense of individuality and style and encapsulates a feeling of calm luxury in which you can relax while at the same time the look is elegant and sophisticated.
