River Farm

Suffolk

River Farm is a characterful Seventeenth-Century farmhouse situated deep in the picturesque East Anglian countryside, scattered with quaint villages, rolling green hills, famous waterways and an abundance of wildlife. The quintessentially English landscape forms an idyllic backdrop for this delightful redesign.

A much-loved family home for more than 40 years, Roselind Wilson and her team delighted in breathing new life into the period home, bringing synergy through the sympathetic redesign of the traditional farmhouse to reflect the owner’s modern lifestyle. Crucial to the project’s success was respecting the heritage and character of the exquisite bones of the existing building.

Project Overview

Our brief was to create a cleaner and more contemporary look while retaining a relaxed and homely feel for the farmhouse. This would mean bringing in contemporary touches that would complement and enhance the original features. This project was all about the period architecture of the house and achieving the right balance between old and new. The centuries-old beams formed the basis of almost every aspect of the redesign.

Lean into the Contrast

We chose a predominantly neutral palette to complement the dark beams and period features, using tactile surfaces and texture to give depth and interest to the scheme.
In the kitchen, teal blue shaker style cabinetry is complemented by the modern, soft grey panelling and textured glass tile splashback.
In the TV room, a comfortable and relaxed L-shaped sofa in a bouclé fabric alongside an oval limed oak coffee table form the more modern aspects of the room and provides an interesting contrast with the fireplace and beams.
Artwork played a key role in connecting the different spaces within the farmhouse., a gallery wall was created to showcase the client’s extensive art collection, the colourful display of classic and modern pieces working harmoniously against the rustic backdrop.

Spotlight Room: The Study

With dual aspect, very tall windows due to low sills, the study captures
the sun from noon and for the remainder of the day. Due to the light
and warmth, our clients favour this room for reading as well as work
and as such, we wanted to introduce materials able to react to the
range and intensity of light and create a sophisticated fit-for-purpose
space.

We played with lots of textures; caramel suede wallpaper, a pale blue
leather-clad desk, brass stud detailing to the shelving and a bright
green radiator to compliment the colour in the artwork. The overall
result is materially sensuous and visually exciting.
Special UV filtered glazing was used to protect the artwork from
sun/light exposure.

Combining Old with New

This project was all about balance in every sense. The design team ensured that the architectural characteristics were able to stand out against quieter backgrounds and introduced contemporary materials and technology to develop a chic modern interior firmly anchored in heritage and tradition.

This juxtaposition is reflected so well in the reception room, where modern, floor-standing speakers stand on either side of the brick fireplace—the perfect contrast of old-world meeting new in this welcoming and stylish country home.
