Ennismore Gardens

Knightsbridge

Situated just a stone’s throw from the tranquillity of Hyde Park and the glamour and bustle of historic Knightsbridge is Ennismore Gardens, a stunning Grade II listed mansion block built in the 1870s.  The owner of this generously proportioned Victorian apartment wanted to transform the interior into a sleek, modern space with the opulent feel of a luxurious hotel suite, to serve as a London Pied-à-terre.

Project Overview

An opulent home from home

Firstly, we set about creating greater proportioned rooms by entirely reconfiguring the space from a 3-bed, 3-bath into a spacious 2-bed, 2-bath apartment. The client was happy to forgo the original layout for a uniquely tailored design that would work on all levels for how she wanted to spend time during visits to London.

Inspiration for the sleek modern style and sophisticated palette came from the modern and bright 1950s feel timber-clad interiors of a favourite Lake Como hotel. Along with the paired-back modern aesthetic, our client wanted the interior to feel sensorial and indulgent so we focused on rich luxurious materials and plenty of ambient lighting.

Minimalist Drama

The modern-minimalist look was developed by introducing clean lines, rich walnut-clad walls and bespoke joinery within the traditional Victorian framework. Expansive bay windows overlooking the gardens below flood the apartment with natural light, allowing us to play with a range of bolder materials and finishes without fear of overwhelming the space.

Omitting the classic Victorian cornicing and skirtings in favour of a discreet shadow gap detail to the walnut-clad walls, invites the rich, decadent timber to take centre stage. Subtly layered architectural lighting further enhances the ambience, for an overall look and feel that exudes contemporary minimalist-drama.

In the open-plan kitchen-living room, bespoke joinery and walnut-clad walls create a perfect backdrop for the monolithic white and black island, which sits in beautiful contrast to the black and white Nero Marquina worktop. The theme of seamless connection is reflected in the waterfall edges of the island, as the floor and worktop flawlessly come to meet.

Room Spotlight: Master Suite

By remodelling the master suite to absorb the previous third bedroom an expansive and free-flowing space was created for the master suite. We designed a squared archway featuring a flush timber reveal to form the entryway from the bedroom through to the spacious walk-through closet and en-suite bathroom beyond.

A palette of crisp off-whites was chosen in the bedroom area, allowing the sumptuous materials and architectural elements to take centre stage.

We emphasised the generous ceiling height and maximised storage capacity by designing the bespoke dressing room wardrobes to full height. The closet area exudes luxury and opulence, with seamless metal framework, bronze-tinted glazed doors and a ceiling clad in a fine walnut veneer.

In the master bathroom, the ongoing narrative between light and dark is echoed in the contrast created between the backlit polished Arabescato Orobico Lucido feature wall and porcelain wall and floor tiles. As a counterpoint to the bold monochromatic scheme, we introduced soft curves in the elegant form of the freestanding bath and added warmth to the palette with the marble-topped timber vanity, bronzed glass detailing and rose gold accents. A specially concealed lighting track adds a gentle wash of light, subtly framing the stone and adding further distinction to the light and dark elements of the scheme.
